Lucia Joyce Full Capacity Limited Edition Book
A special limited edition book ‘Lucia Joyce Full Capacity’ has been born on time to celebrate and share the hidden artistic achievements of Lucia Anna Joyce on Saint Lucia’s Day (December 13th) 2024! This was a day traditionally celebrated in the Joyce family with candles, honouring Lucia and the origin of her name, which means ‘light’, at the darkest time of the year. December 13th was winter solstice, in the Julian calendar.
We decided to bring out my Joyce Studies Annual essay “Fail Better: Lucia Joyce and the Abbey Theatre Ballets” as a standalone publication in order to share the little known facts of Lucia’s artistic career more widely, as part of my campaign to change the accepted narrative about this overlooked artist, who is usually dismissed as ‘mad’. Fake news! A mad artist (one of a legion), would be closer to the truth! I invite you to read this little book, with 25 pages of footnotes, and armed with this information, to make up your own mind.
Please feel free to get in touch with me directly at deirdremulrooney@gmail.com if you wish to acquire a copy. The book, published by Grand Canal Publishing, is available in Dublin at Swenys Joycean Pharmacy; and at James Joyce Centre, who will be hosting a Saint Lucia’s Day lunchtime launch event at 1pm. Thanks to Cormac O’Hanrahan of Printwell Design for doing such a great job on the design and printing of this important document of reclamation!
